Lucky for us, April 20 falls on Easter this year, and while we may not be rolling out all the hoopla like we did last year, we do have some goodies up our sleeves! One thing you can expect is that we are bringing back the crowd favorite doorbuster for the chance to find exciting prizes hidden in a piece of deliciously rich milk chocolate. Only this time, dozens of prizes will be hidden in chocolate easter eggs! We love a good play on a holiday…
You can also expect Ivy Hall’s 2025 420 celebration to start on Weed Wednesday, April 16th and run through Sunday, April 20 with special one-day only hours of 8am-8pm.
But despite the legalization of Cannabis and the use of cannabis as the main alternative to other recreational activities such as alcohol over the last few years, many still don’t know what “420” means or where it originated from.
Allow us to enlighten you.
The History of 420
The number “420” has become a widely recognized symbol, particularly in relation to cannabis culture. Its history and significance have evolved over time, with various theories about its origin. Here’s a breakdown of how 420 became associated with marijuana:
Origin Story
The most commonly accepted story traces the origin of “420” to a group of high school students in San Rafael, California, in 1971. These students, known as the “Waldos” because they often hung out by a wall at school, were searching for a rumored abandoned marijuana crop. They decided to meet at 4:20 p.m. every day to search for the crop. Although they never found it, they began using “420” as a code for smoking marijuana.
Musical Influence
The Waldos had connections to the Grateful Dead, a famous rock band. Through this connection, the term “420” spread within the Grateful Dead community and eventually into the broader counterculture. The band’s fans, known as “Deadheads,” helped popularize the number during the 1970s and 1980s. Hence, why you see some of our merch with the Dancing Bear icon on it.
April 20 as “420 Day”
Over time, 4:20 p.m. evolved into a time for marijuana enthusiasts to gather and partake in cannabis consumption. The number 420 also became associated with April 20 (4/20 in the U.S. date format), which is now celebrated as “420 Day” by cannabis users around the world. April 20th is a day for pro-cannabis events, activism, and gatherings.
Pop Culture Influence
By the 1990s, “420” became more widely known, especially after it was mentioned in pop culture, such as in TV shows, movies, and music. This contributed to the number becoming synonymous with marijuana in a broader context. High-profile mentions in the media and cannabis-related events held on April 20 helped solidify the number’s significance.
Legalization and Modern-Day Use
In recent years, as marijuana has become increasingly legalized and accepted in various parts of the world, 420 has retained its association with cannabis culture. Many businesses in the cannabis industry use 420 as part of their branding, and it continues to be a day of celebration for marijuana advocates.
Myths Debunked
There have been various urban legends surrounding the origin of 420, such as it being the police code for marijuana use or a reference to Hitler’s birthday, but these are widely debunked. The San Rafael High School story remains the most credible explanation.
420 in the Modern Era
